Given an optimistic outlook on human nature, it would be safe to say that most of us would be horrified if we found out that most of what we buy has been created through worker exploitation, land grabs, or even outright slavery.
Yet, incredibly, nearly everything we buy (clothes, tropical fruits, chocolate, sugar, electronics...) has been tainted by exploitation or modern slavery. So what to do? CERES believes that the first step to a fairer world is awareness. As such, we are working to run workshops to increase student knowledge of these issues and to work together to find better solutions, both on campus and in our own lives. Last year, we worked to remove MCSS investments from fossil fuel companies and their financers and to invest in sustainable alternatives (cities, public transportation bonds) instead. This year, we will focus on modern slavery, indigenous community rights and sustainable sourcing. |
